Chitragupt Samaj - Swastika

Swastika is derived from SU (Well), ASTI (Is) KA (Noun ending).It means “It is well “, and thus signifies Happiness, Pleasure, and Good luck.

It is a mystic symbol which is sacred to most Hindu sects. It is shaped like a Greek Cross with the extremities of the four arms bent round in the same direction.

Swastika is of two types:-Right handed or male type representing The SUN and GANESHA. In this type the extremities of the arms of the Cross bend Clockwise as shown above and are considered auspicious.

Many theories have been mentioned about Swastika:-

It has been described as the emblem of ZEUS, the god of SUN, FIRE, and RAIN, The TRINITY, and also the Supreme Being BRAHMA. It is believed to be derived from “Chakra”, which is reduced to four spokes and at right angles. In the Vedas, it is described as “Wheel of the “Sun”. It indicates cosmic procession and Evolution around a fixed centre.

This symbol has been in use since the time of Indus Valley Civilisation   (3000 B.C.-700 B.C). However it is not exclusive to India, but is known all over the World Archaeological discoveries have shown its widespread use in Egypt, China, Greece and Mexico.

The inauspicious anti-clockwise Swastika was used by Hitler as Nazi emblem.

The other one is Left handed or female type which represents Goddess Kali. Its arms are bent anti-clockwise and it is believed to be inauspicious.

The auspicious symbol is used in all Hindu religious ceremonies, marriages and during the invocation of the nine planets. It is worshipped as the symbol of SUN and GANESHA.
